County AIDS panel has public forum tomorrow
by Bill Harris
First came the Kinsey Report, then Masters and Johnson. Now we have the Citizen's Committee on AIDS/HIV. Formed in cooperation with the mayor of Cleveland, the three commissioners of Cuyahoga County, the Cleveland Foundation and the George Gund Foundation, the Committee is about to begin a momentous task-to establish the true status of AIDS and HIV in Cuyahoga County.
The Committee is set to hold its first public forum tomorrow, on Saturday, May 15 from 1-5 pm at the United Church of Christ National Offices, 700 Prospect Avenue, Cleveland. Those living within the AIDS/HIV spectrum or have stories to tell are encouraged to attend. Anyone who is willing to speak will be given 10 minutes.
Ronald Stewart, the committee's executive director, wants to stress to individuals considering testifying that steps will be taken to ensure their anonymity. The Committee was formed in October, 1992 with an 18-month lifespan. Over the next year the group hopes to gather the information necessary to develop an action plan which will enhance advocacy, coordination, and visibility regarding AIDS/HIV.
Their purpose is fivefold:
To lend greater visibility to the issue of AIDS in the community.
To assess community needs at this point in the history of the epidemic in Cuyahoga County.
To evaluate the current services in relation to needs apparent-including direct services, medical and otherwise, edu cation and prevention.
To develop an action plan which allows our community to move from current service and policy levels to those recommended by the community review.
To recommend funding priorities for the public and private sectors based on the Committee's findings.
Made up of twelve individuals, includ ing such well known names as Josephine Abady, artistic director of the Cleveland Play House; Joseph Interrante, executive director of the Health Issues Taskforce; and Rev. Bill Johnson, secretary for AIDS Programs and Ministries Coordination at the United Church of Christ. The Committee is chaired by businessman Victor Gelb.
Stewart expresses the need for community involvement and support in this infor mation gathering enterprise and is secure in the knowledge that the Committee will be able to complete its task in the 13 months remaining. The Committee holds open meetings and the public is encouraged to attend. For further information regarding this or any other of the Committee's efforts Stewart can be reached at 664-2607.

Lakewood HIV program seeking volunteers
by Bob Boone
There are some 300 Lakewood residents living with AIDS or HIV, according to Chris Ann MacGregor, and she is there to help them. MacGregor is the coordinator of FACT (Facing the AIDS Challenge Together). In place for about two months now, the program is designed to provide meals, transportation, and moderate housecleaning for people ages 18-59 with AIDS or HIV.
Responding to calls from public-health nurses, Kathleen Lawther, head of Lakewood's Department of Human Services, hired MacGregor to coordinate FACT. MacGregor holds a Bachelor of Arts degree as a community wellness educator and has worked with the West Side Women's Center and the Visiting Nurse Association of Cleveland.
Her immediate focus is alerting those in need of the program to the very existence of FACT. By distributing flyers in hospitals and working with services including the Health Issues Taskforce and the Living Room, MacGregor is trying to get the message out. Among those who have heard are other communities' officials such as those in Cleveland Heights, who are interested to see the results of a localized service for people with AIDS and HIV.
Others who have responded are volunteers, like the mother and her son and a husband and wife, all of whom have contacted MacGregor with offers of assisting in the FACT program. Still, more volunteers are needed to implement the services in place and to meet the hopes of expansion. As well as assisting people with AIDS and HIV, MacGregor is aware of the need to provide respite-support for their lovers and families and friends. In providing basic support such as meals and transportation, FACT aims to nurture an atmosphere of quality and independent living and thus contribute to the physical and emotional well-being of Lakewood residents with HIV and AIDS.
FACT was begun with a grant from the Design Industries Foundation for AIDS (DIFFA), an organization of florists and fashion and interior designers. The $15,000 sum allows MacGregor and a second parttimer to serve up to 20 residents. Additional funding must be secured to sustain and expand the program.
Individuals interested in FACT or wishing to volunteer should contact Chris Ann MacGregor at 529-7695 on Mondays between 9 am and noon.
